Murder Suspect in Custody

Authorities have made an arrest in the

slaying of a 27-year-old Ellsworth man whose body was found last

week in a ditch in the Hancock County town of Amherst.

State police detectives arrested 34-year-old John Turner of

Bangor and charged him with murder in the death of Tad Howard.

Spokesman Steve McCausland of the Public Safety Department said

Turner was arrested this afternoon at Acadia Hospital, a

psychiatric facility in Bangor. He was transported to the Hancock

County Jail and is expected to make his initial appearance Monday

in Superior Court in Ellsworth.

Authorities revealed for the first time that Howard had been

shot to death. And McCausland said Howard and Turner knew each

other, but the spokesman declined to go into specifics.

Howard’s body was found July Ninth and police immediately

labeled the death suspicious. Investigators later classified the

case as a homicide but said they did not believe anyone else was in

danger.
