Eric Higgins of Kennebunk fired a one-under-par 69 today at the Waterville Country Club to win the 88th Maine Amateur golf championship by a single stroke.
Higgins finished with a 54-hole score of 209 to hold off a charging Toby Spector of Waterville, who carded a 67 in the final round to come in second.
Joseph Alvarez of Hampden, with a 71, was third, at 211.
Lance Libby of Sidney led for the first two days with a pair of below-par rounds. But today, he ballooned to 75 to finish in a tie for fourth, at 212, with 13-time champion Mark Plummer.
The field of 126 was winnowed to 42 prior to the final round.
