(WABI) – Steve McClausland, spokesman for the State Police, says the death of 20-month-old Teairra Leathers has been under investigation since she died at Eastern Maine Medical Center last week. An autopsy by the state medical examiner revealed that Leathers died of head trauma.
Police arrested the child’s babysitter yesterday and charged her with manslaughter. 23-year-old Heather Fortin will make her first court appearance tomorrow.
Police say fortin called for an ambulance on the night of June 18th after the baby was unresponsive.
The child’s mother had dropped Teairra and her older sister off at Fortin’s home earlier that evening.
