(WABI) – Police have identified the victims as 31-year- old Kirk Sirois of Norridgewock and 31-year-old Sandra Shaw of Madison.
24-year-old Adam Tomkins of New Brunswick was driving a big rig and had struck and killed a moose. After which he pulled over into the breakdown lane.
Troopers said Sirois then struck the remains of the moose and swerved into the breakdown lane, crashing into the rear of the big rig. The crash killed Sirois and Shaw, who was a passenger in the vehicle.
Even though troopers said a second vehicle also struck the remains and ended up off the road, nobody else was injured in the crash.
State Police remind motorists that this is the time of year when moose are on the move. They advise that motorists need to be extra cautious, especially at night, when it is difficult to see the animals.
