Water Extraction Law Enacted

(AP) – The bill addresses many of the concerns of a campaign called H-2-O for Maine, which sought to initiate a referendum on the issue.

Activists worked with companies that draw water for commercial bottling, the Baldacci administration and the Legislature’s Natural Resources Committee in formulating the bill, which awaits Governor John Baldacci’s signature.

The committee’s House chairman, Theodore Koffman of Bar Harbor, says the measure requires a more thorough and more public process for reviewing permit applications for commercial water extractions.

He says the owner of Poland Spring, the state’s leading bottled water company, played a &quot:constructive role&quot: in designing the bill.
