Woolwich Shooting

Authorities say a 35-year-old man needed surgery in a Lewiston hospital after being shot in the stomach during an early morning altercation in Woolwich.

State police say Daniel Wright of Brunswick was shot by 22-year-old Matthew Tainter around 4 a.m. Sunday in Tainter’s apartment.

Wright was transported to Mid Coast Hospital and then airlifted to Central Maine Medical Center.

Steve McCausland of the Public Safety Department said Tainter, the grandson of the late Sagadahoc County Sheriff Arthur Tainter, is being questioned by investigators but has not been charged.

McCausland said Wright, Tainter and Tainter’s girlfriend were in the apartment when the altercation broke out and Tainter shot Wright with a handgun.

Tainter then dialed 9-1-1.

Sagadahoc sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene and called state police.

The two agencies are conducting a joint investigation.
