Concrete canoe at UMaine

A GROUP OF ENGINEERING STUDENTS DESIGNED AND BUILT A CONCRETE CANOE THEY’LL RACE AGAINST TWO DOZEN OTHERS AT NATIONALS NEXT MONTH…

THE CUT-OUT REVEALS THEIR CONCRETE IS FILLED WITH LITTLE HOLLOW BEADS PRESSED AROUND CARBON FIBER MESH FOR RE-INFORCEMENT.

THE CANOE WEIGHS 220 POUNDS BUT THEIR CONCRETE IS LESS DENSE THAN WATER SO IT FLOATS..

THEY RACED IT AT REGIONALS A WEEK AND HALF AGO AND WERE RAMMED BY ANOTHER CANOE, IT WAS SCARY BUT THEY DIDN’T FLIP…THEY FINISHED SECOND AT REGIONALS ALLOWING THEM TO GO TO NATIONALS FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR.
