Seat Belt Law

Governor John Baldacci has signed a bill that will allow police to pull you over for not wearing a seat belt. Under the current law not wearing a belt is classified as a secondary offense, which means law officers have to stop you for another violation first.

The new law applies not only to the driver but also anyone else riding in the car. However, it doesn’t go until effect until April of 2008. Until then, motorists will get warnings only.
