It’s known as a final resting place for solid waste, but soon, the Pine Tree Landfill in Hampden will be known for something else…..producing electricity.
The landfill was fitted with a gas collection system six years ago in order to control odor produced there.
Pipes and wells are set up throughout the facility to trap gas, a then a vacuum forces the gas to a big flame, burning off the methane and wiping out a lot of the odor.
In a few weeks the landfill will break ground on a site where engines will be installed, to turn that gas in to electricity.
The Pine Tree project is the frist of its type in the state of Maine.
