(AP) – The Department of Corrections also says about 90 additional prisoners will be transferred within the next few weeks.
Commissioner Martin Magnusson says overcrowding in the system poses a danger for inmates and guards alike. In his words: ":We are at a breaking point and something had to be done.":
The department says the current prison population of 2,150 is more than 200 above capacity and is projected to rise to 2,192.
Corrrections officials are working with local sheriffs and county jails to line up housing for state prisoners on a per-day contract basis.
Other options remain on the table, including hiring more corrections officers to reopen closed prison facilities and housing some inmates at out-of-state prisons.
