Baltimore announcer Gary Thorne is backing off
comments he made on the air saying that the red spot on Boston
pitcher Curt Schilling’s sox during the 2004 post-season wasn’t
Thorne said during the Red Sox-Orioles broadcast Wednesday that
Boston catcher Doug Mirabelli admitted the red spot was a hoax.
However, Thorne said after speaking with Mirabelli today that he
misinterpreted the remarks and that the back up catcher had been
Mirabelli says he spoke with Thorne in the Boston clubhouse
about six months after the 2004 playoffs and only remarked that the
team had gotten a lot of publicity out of the incident.
Schilling bloody socks resulted from a temporary surgery and
seemed to be a rallying point for the Red Sox as they overcame a
three-games-to-none deficit to beat the Yankees in the American
League Championship Series and went on to win the World Series for
the first time 86 years.
