Latest on Auburn Shooting Death

Police are trying to figure out whether a gunman killed during an hours-long standoff in Auburn died from

police fire or from a self-inflicted wound.

The nearly 17-hour standoff with James Peters ended Saturday morning when police forced their way into the

house where he had holed up and found him dead.

An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.

Authorities also found an A-K-47 rifle that they think Peters

used to kill his mother.

Her body has been recovered and will also undergo an autopsy.

It remained in the driveway of the house during the standoff.

Officers said it was too dangerous to try to retrieve it.

Peters had exchanged gunfire with police throughout the standoff.

Attempts at negotiations failed.
