U. Maine Changes Radio Stations

The university announced on Thursday that after 14 years of partnering with WZON, they’ve now made a deal with Clear Channel owned WVOM, to broadcast all U Maine sporting events.

Coverage on WVOM will begin this fall, when the football gets underway.

University of Maine athletic director Blake James says the decision was made in part because WVOM can reach so many listeners.

Dale Duff, program director for WZON tells TV5 he’d been negotiating a contract in good faith, but on Wednesday he received a call from Learfield Sports, the company hired to do U Maine’s negotiating, informing him that the clear channel deal had been made.

Duff and station owner Stephen King say that’s bad business, and they’re disappointed that the university is choosing to do business with a company out of San Antonio, Texas, rather than a local station.
