New Cigarette Restrictions?

The new bill would require cigarette makers to sell only &quot:fire safe&quot: brands of cigarettes.

The Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee unanimously approved the bill. Members anticipate it will easily pass in the full legislature.

State Fire Marshal John Dean told committee members that smoking was the number one cause of fatal fires in maine between 1993 and 2005. He says many of those fires were started when someone fell asleep while smoking.

Self-extinguishing cigarettes have a reduced tendency to burn when they’re left unattended.
