Thanks to quick work by Waterville firefighters, the Huhtamaki plant in Waterville is still standing.
A major fire broke out Saturday night at the packaging mill just after 8 pm.
The plant is located on College Avenue, on the Waterville-Fairfield line.
Huhtamaki manufactures Chinet plates and employees about 400 people.
When fire crews arrived on scene, thick smoke was blowing across College Ave, and they could see heavy fire inside the windows. They immediately evacuated the building and called in crews from surrounding towns to help fight the flames.
It took several hours for crews to put out the fire. Fortunately, no one was injured.
The fire apparently started in a dryer and quickly got up into the roof.
No word yet on the extent of damage to the building.
Firefighters say dryer fires are fairly common in manufacturing plants, but the fires don’t usually get out of control, as this one did.
