Lobstermen gathered in Belfast Wednesday morning to voice their concerns over LD 170.
It is currently illegal for groundfishermen to sell in maine the lobsters that they bring up in their nets. LD 170 would change that.
The Portland Fish Exchange says its seen a declining catch in recent years as more groundfishermen go to Massachusetts where landing lobsters is legal.
Lobstermen argue that changing the law won’t keep groundfishermen in the state, but will allow draggers to target larger lobsters that are the brood stock of the industry.
A hearing on the bill will be held at the Augusta Civic Center at 9 o’clock Monday morning.
