Engineers at UMaine’s wood composites center designed ballistic panels that convert into protective tent walls, a technology that is already on its way to Afghanistan.
The panels are made up of a wood core sandwiched in between sheets of resin and fiber, and are designed to withstand a mortar attack.
The director of the project says the innovation basically turns a soft-sided tent into a walk-in helmet.
The first ":demonstration tent": was shipped off Wednesday to the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan. Members of the maine national guard are assigned to that unit.
