It appears that a spring season won’t come until 2008, at the earliest.
The Chairman of the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission said reopening the river to a catch-and-release season this spring poses too great a risk to the fish population.
The last spring season was in 1999.
An experimental 30-day season last fall attracted more than 200 fishermen from around the country. Only one fish was caught.
The commission is expected to take up the issue of a spring season when it meets in Augusta next month.
While a spring season is unlikely, the panel is expected to consider another limited fall season.
