School Consolidation

(AP)-Governor John Baldacci and Education Commissioner Susan Gendron will be in northern Maine Monday to speak with students, teachers, school administrators and business groups about their sweeping education reorganization plan.

The governor and the commissioner will be in Presque Isle this morning and in Fort Kent this afternoon.

The governor’s plan — dubbed &quot:Local Schools, Regional Support&quot: — calls for cutting the number of school districts from 290 down to 26.

The governor says his plan would save the state nearly 250 (m) million dollars over three years beginning July 2008.
