Cancer, the Leading Cause of Death in Maine

Updated 7 years ago

The American Cancer Society is reporting that cancer is the leading cause of death in Maine. And today lawmakers were pushing a new bill that would help arrest many forms of cancer.

Senator Lisa Marrache is the sponsor of a measure aiming to cut healthcare costs and increase the availability of early screening and detection.

It also addresses the needs to improve cancer treatment and the quality of cancer survivorship.

At the State House this morning lawmakers from both sides of the isle shared their own stories of survival.

Representative Meredith Burgess lost both her father and a friend to cancer and was told in 1999 she had breast cancer. Burgess is co-sponsoring the bill.

In 2006

three thousand one hundred and ninety Mainers died of cancer.
