Education Consolidation

A day-long public hearing before the committees on appropriations and education will take place at the Augusta Civic Center, beginning at 9am, Monday.

Much attention has been focused thus far on reducing the number of school districts and slashing administrative costs, but the governor also wants to change the formula the state uses to determine teacher salaries.

The resulting cuts would be the monetary equivalent of 650 teaching positions.

The governor wants to use some of the money saved toward expanding the state’s laptop computer program to all high school students as well as create a college scholarship fund for needy students.
