Maine Tomato Growers Busy in January

undreds of thousands of fresh vegetables are ready to be picked in the middle of winter, right here in Maine.

hat harvest is taking place at an indoor farm in Madison.

W

e’re far from the warm and sunny months of summer but that’s not stopping tomato growers from harvesting their first crop at Backyard Farms.

he plants were started in November, and are vine-ripened tomatoes, which hold clusters of 5 on each vine.

B

ackyard Farms CEO&nbsp:Paul Sellew says the plants will produce about one million tomatoes per year&nbsp:and that’s the same number of square footage this greenhouse is on.

he massive building sits on 25 acres and Sellew says the goal is to make Maine the produce capital of New England.
