Slum dwellers and activists in Guatemala held a ceremony this weekend to honor a Maine woman who died in a traffic accident on Thursday.
Hanley Denning was known among those she helped as Angel del Basuero: The Angel of the Garbage Dump.
Eight years ago, she founded an organization called Safe Passage, designed to help kids who live in the slums and are forced to scavenge through the city garbage dump.
The mass was celebrated in Guatemala City, at the Safe Passage branch offices.
Denning was a native of Yarmouth, and graduated from Bowdoin in 1992.
She died when the vehicle she was traveling in was struck by an oncoming bus near Antigua.
Hanley Denning was 36.
