It is now illegal in Bangor to smoke in a car, when a child is present.
The bangor city council passed the ordinance earlier this month, but it didn’t take effect until 12:01 this morning.
Police Chief Don Winslow says he’s given instructions to his officers on how to handle violators of the new ordinance:
":People shouldn’t anticipate that we’re going to set up roadblocks and diligently work to see how many people we can catch. But if officers come across a violation, they’ll take the opportunity to remind people that this is an ordinance designed to protect children and you shouldn’t be doing that.":
Just a reminder, any violators who are summonsed will receive a fifty dollar fine.
