Environmentally Conscious Inn In Hallowell

Owners of a Hallowell inn are getting a big share of their energy needs from a solar electric and hot water system that’s believed to be Maine’s largest of its kind. The system was displayed to the public Thursday morning.

The 15-kilowatt solar system covers the roof of a building at the Maple Hill Farm Bed and Breakfast Inn and Conference Center.

Co-owner Scott Cowger is a former legislator who chaired the Natural Resources Committee. Cowger says he brings into his business a string commitment to minimizing the impact on the environment.

Cowger says the solar system and a wind-powered turbine already installed at the inn are expected to supply a third to half of the facility’s energy needs. He says the 166-thousand dollar solar system’s expected to pay for itself in five years.
