Still Thin

The arrival of extreme cold weather is welcome news for ice fishermen and others hoping head out on Maine’s lakes and ponds, but game officials say you need to wait a while longer before heading out.

Despite the plunging temperatures, the ice is still much too thin in some areas.

The recent snow fall is actually acting as insulation: keeping those warm temps from earlier this month locked underneath the snow.

Wardens are urging anyone who still wants to ice fish to stick to smaller bodies of water which take less time to freeze safely, and remind ice fishermen to be sure to check the ice thickness with a drill or chisel.
