Mercury Pollution

Mercury pollution in the upper Kennebec and Androscoggin watersheds is dangerously high according to some new studies, which also put the blame on coal-fired power plants.

The studies found that mercury has reached unhealthy levels in the region’s fish and birds, threatening the health of people who eat them.

Children and pregnant women are especially vulnerable.

Senator Susan Collins is proposing legislation to reduce mercury emissions, and to make the government do a better job of monitoring pollution.
