President Bush will address the nation at 9 o’clock tonight, spelling out his plans for the next phase of the U.S. War in Iraq.
However, he’s already lost the battle to convince Maine’s congressional delegation.
Republican Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe both oppose sending more troops to Iraq, as do democratic Congressmen Tom Allen and Michael Michaud. All four believe Iraqi prime minister Nouri al Maliki has to bring about a political solution, not a military one.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Maine’s National Guard tells TV5 that there are no plans to include any of the state’s guard units in this latest troop surge.
Major Michael Backus says there are currently 342 Maine National Guard personnel serving in Iraq, but they are all due home by this summer.
