Three-thousand people including the Maine legislative body, showed up for John Baldacci’s gala celebration. They packed the Civic Center at around 7pm, dressed in their very best. Music was provided for dancing from four different bands from across the state.
Most say this event was an opportunity to reflect on the governor’s inauguration speech Wednesday night, which highlighted a plan to cut property taxes and focus on the state’s economic development.
Lawmakers say the gala an important part of political business to get to know each other before the voting starts this session.
Private donors chipped in the 250 to 300-thousand dollars to pay for last night’s gala as well as the inauguration the night before. The state does not provide any funding for the events.
