The ice fishing season officially gets underway today…but game wardens are warning folks not to venture out just yet.
This winter’s mild weather has made for poor ice conditions across the state, and wardens are advising folks to stay off the ice until we’ve had a few solid weeks of cold weather.
Rescue crews were called to Lake Wassookeag in Dexter on Sunday just just after 3 pm, when a man was trapped in icy water after trying to rescue his dog.
Authorities say the man and his wife were walking their dog when the animal plunged through the ice. The man got a boat from the shoreline and took it out to try and rescue the dog, but ended up getting stuck in the icy water himself, and was submerged up to his waist by the time rescue crews arrived.
The man spent about twenty minutes in the water, but refused medical attention. Unfortunately, his dog could not be saved.
There is also word that someone fell through the ice on Rangley Lake last night. There are no details yet on what happened.
